I suppose one reason we have cliches in movies is that cliches are often based on reality. So here we have a police detective so dedicated to his cases that his home life suffers. And we see this a lot with fictional policeman, but this show is based on an actual case and its participants.
And the villain is so cocky and just plain evil that he seems to be a product of an overwrought scriptwriters imagination. Was he really like this? But of course it doesnt really matter in a way. This is a drama, not a documentary, so some license is allowed and perhaps even expected.
