Storyline

Bram Vermeulen travels along the borders of Turkey. With Europe collapsing on one side and the faltering regimes of the Arab world on the other, Turkish influence in these regions will grow. Here, the new power dynamics around the Mediterranean are being forged. Major developments with enormous consequences for the people who live there. Vermeulen enters the twilight zones along the borders with Greece, Cyprus, Syria, and Iraq, searching for the true dividing lines with our neighbors. This is an important quest, in which we learn as much about the Turks as we do about ourselves. Borders create countries, not the other way around. Borders define the land: this is where our domain ends and that of others begins. Turkey is a borderland. A country that desperately defines itself by its contrast with its neighbors. Turkey is not Greek, not Russian, not Arab. Turkey is the twilight zone between the Middle East and Europe.
