Storyline

A Shocking Accident is a 1982 British short comedy film directed by James Scott, based on Graham Greene's short story by the same name. About a boy whose father is killed in Naples, when a pig falls on him as a balcony collapses. The incident haunts the boy through his later life until he meets a girl who understands his side of the story. The film won an Oscar at the 55th Academy Awards for Best Live Action Short and was nominated for BAFTA in 1983.

        I thought that this had a little of the Tales of the Unexpected to it as we first meet a Neapolitan lady who is lovingly feeding her rather substantial pig on her rickety balcony several floors up above the street. Shortly afterwards, we learn that the poor young Jerome, a long way away at a posh English boarding school, has just been orphaned and that the cause of his predicament is the source of much mirth and ridicule at school. Indeed, it isnt only there but as he grows older this misadventure continues to provide much merriment at his expense as his aunt (Barbara Hicks) takes a particularly honest view when regaling her guests with this story even after he has become an accountant.
