Storyline

“There is no work in Ukraine”, said to me my father when he appeared in my life when I was 18 years old and just received my first foreign passport. He offered to arrange a work visa for me so that I could join him in the Czech Republic where he worked in construction. Between 2003 and 2007 he wrote me letters telling about his solitary life abroad where work becomes the main, or even sole, part of a person’s life. These letters embody the striving against forgetting the politically, economically and technologically transformative period in Ukraine. The visual part of the film is based on my personal video archives, which I shot on miniDV during my first time abroad in the summer of 2006. The voice-over belongs to a person who doesn’t exist in reality, the better to correspond to a voice of a person who doesn’t exist in my life, but whose voice I hear when reading the letters addressed to someone who perhaps didn’t exist either.
